When you buy an Apple phone you buy it for a lot of reasons including how great it looks. These phones are thin, have a crisp clean look, and made to feel good in your hand. Yet, as soon as you buy the phone you immediately put it in a case to protect it from drops. Well, what if you could protect your phone from drops and STILL get to enjoy holding it the way it was meant to be held? That is where the Utomic Edge comes in.
The Utomic Edge protection system is a set of four shockproof and scuffproof rubber pieces, which Utomic calls FlexCore shells, that stick onto the corners of your phone. With the help of their partners at 3M, they made a specially designed adhesive that also doubles as a shock absorber. Plus, if you decide to take the corners off, there will not be any residue left behind. Sweet!
So how do these corner pieces work? Well, because they are just slightly thicker than your phone, when you put it down, no part of the phone will actually touch the flat surface. And in case you’re wondering, Utomic says their system can protect your phone from a drop up to a max height of 5 feet. That’s about ear’s height.
“I became comfortable with the idea that my phone was protected and yet I could touch and enjoy my phone the way it was intended to be used.”
Because I have always put full cases on my phones, using this system made me feel uncomfortable with how naked my phone was. Whenever I put my phone down I did so very carefully thinking somehow my phone could get scratched. Of course, physically, that would not be possible. After a few days I did eventually got used to the concept and trusted the protection system. I became comfortable with the idea that my phone was protected and yet I could touch and enjoy my phone the way it was intended to be used.
Unfortunately, there are some scenarios where this system could not protect my phone.
The first scenario is when putting the phone on the edge of a table. Sometimes table space is lacking or I want to place it on the edge for easy access. For the system to work all four corners need to be on the table. Placing the phone on the edge of a table will leave the phone physically touching the table.
The next scenario is when I put my phone in the car. I don’t have a phone holder so I place it in a certain spot where I can see the screen. Unfortunately, behind it are the cigarette lighters that hit the back of the phone. The corners are no help in this scenario.
Lastly, and I know you’ve been wondering, what about if you drop your phone on rocks or anywhere not flat? Well, you’re right. This system will not be very effective there. But then again, how often do you find yourself in such a scenario? I guess the closest I would get to such a scenario is dropping it on the stairs. Other than that, I would most likely drop it on the floor or over a table.
